What if?

What happens when students don’t understand their rights?

  • Students who don’t learn about freedom of speech are vulnerable to rights oppression. Youths who grow up as ill informed students become ill informed adults. These people may more willingly give up their basic rights to the government for “security”, “equality”, and “the protection of other rights”.
  • Students who do not understand the fine line where their rights begin are unable to participate in an educated debate on First Amendment rights and are thus unable to participate in and help rights progress and reform.

These results are not only disturbing; they are dangerous. Ignorance about the basics of this free society is a danger to our nation’s future.
